Caillou Funny Bear How You Funny

Sprout Diner was an early online exclusive webseries created by Sprout. Sprout Diner did have various guest appearances from Sprout characters, and was briefly a block in March 2008.

Premise

"This animated program features the Sprout® family (Brussel, Bean and Alfalfa) and favorite Sprout characters set in the storybook world of PBS KIDS Sprout. In each episode, a different character calls in looking for a healthy meal or the perfect snack, and the Sprout family whips up a daily special, like Noddy's Apple Car, Bob's Build- Me-Up Berry Shake or Elmo's Funny Faced Pizza Pies. Through catchy songs, preschool humor and exposure to viewers' favorite characters, children will see that healthy eating can be fun for everyone." (link)

Goals

"Sprout Diner introduces preschoolers to the concept of healthy eating. All the recipes used in the program are accredited by KidsHealth, a leading nonprofit children's health organization with one of the most visited sites on the Web, KidsHealth.org."

Interactive Components

"At SproutOnline.com, parents and preschoolers can download recipes featured on the show, get the nutritional breakdown for each recipe, and even watch episodes of Sprout Diner. There are also online games and activities featuring Brussel, Bean and Alfalfa."

Co-Viewing Components

"Parent and preschooler together choose a dish that was featured on Sprout Diner. The parent goes to Sprout On Demand and selects the related cooking segment for viewing so they can see how the recipe is made."

VOD Components

"Cooking segments featuring Sprout Diner recipes are available on Sprout On Demand. Real kids and their parents are shown making each dish."

Webisode format

Each webisode started with a theme song, followed by Bean calling a character requesting a meal after a hard day's play. Bean then says "Time to create with the Sprout Family!", and Brussel and Alfalfa sing a song. Bean and Alfalfa pitch the idea to Brussel, who makes and comes up with the meal, which he hands to Alfalfa, who gives it to the character on her bike.

Characters

  • Brussel (voiced by Earl Fisher[1]) - A gray haired guy with a mustache who comes up with the meals.
  • Bean - A Black-haired Lady wearing A Green Dress who receives calls from Sprout characters. She is Brussel's daughter.
  • Alfalfa - Bean's brown haired teenage daughter who rides a bike.

History

The interstitial series was first announced in a December 2005 news article when Sprout was planning to produce interstitials about healthy eating, geography, music, and creative storytelling created by Andrew Beecham, Meredith Halpern-Ranzer, and Susan Karden.[2] Sprout Diner was the healthy eating series, launching on September 18, 2006 [3], as part of Sprout's 1st anniversary programming. In addition, the geography series became The Many Adventures of Mr. Mailman, and the ideas for music and creative storytelling series were dropped, and it is unknown if they came to fruition or even exist.

March Menu aired in March of 2008 (AKA "Nutrition Month"), which meant Sprout celebrated a month of healthy food-themed episodes of shows.

Diner got phased out on September 20, 2008, just before Sprout's 3rd anniversary. However, Brussel, Bean, and Alfalfa would appear in Preschool Musical the same year.

Notes

  • The "Sprout Diner Cafe" from The Let's Go Show was themed after the series.
  • The voice actors for the various characters that called in reprise their roles like Finty Williams (Angelina Ballerina), Dean Wendt (Barney), Benedict Campbell (Papa Bear), Greg Proops (Bob), Annie Bovaird (Caillou), Ty Olsson (Ord), John Sparkles (Sam), Maile Flanagan (Piggley Winks), Donna Cherry (Jay Jay), Michele Lepe (Nina), David A. Kaye (Noddy), David Sant (Pingu), Simon Shelton-Barnes, John Simmit, Nikky Smedley, and Pui Fan Lee (the Teletubbies), Julie Westwood (Tula), Holly Gauthier-Frankel (Sagwa), Kevin Clash (Elmo), Michael Brandon (Narrator), and Gord Robertson (Zoboo).
  • In the Berenstain Bears episode, Papa Bear erroneously refers to the Bear family as the "Berenstain" family. The Berenstain Bears are named after Stan and Jan Berenstain, the authors of the original books; Mama, Papa, Sister, and Brother are actually the Bear family.
  • In the Noddy episode, Noddy's request comes in by way of a balloon and a paper letter, rather than on the telephone.
  • In the Thomas episode, Thomas is carrying a flag with the Sprout logo on it.
  • In the Teletubbies episode, the Teletubbies make their call by way of the voice trumpet.
  • The Barney episode features Barney on a pretend telephone in the episode "Pennies, Nickels, Dimes," with Dean Wendt looping his lines.
  • The Good Night Show is the only Sprout programming block to have an episode. Returning the favor, Nina and Star put Sprout Diner stickers on their snack bag crafts.
  • When this was discontinued and Boohbah was pulled from the network, its snack was themed after The Mighty Jungle.
  • The Make Way for Noddy, Fireman Sam, Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat, and Jay Jay the Jet Plane snacks were later unbranded once the shows stopped airing on Sprout.
  • The Barney & Friends snack was later made by the big purple dinosaur himself with Kelly and Chica on The Sunny Side Up Show and in a Universal Kids video on Facebook.
  • When Sprout Diner was discontinued and Jakers was pulled from the network, its snack was themed after Chica.
  • The song that plays in the first segment of each episode is "The Big Laugh" By Jürgen Schlachter. It was featured in many episodes of Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants and Cartoon Network's Regular Show.
